People have been gathering together
to make music for as long as history has been recorded and probably for
much longer than that. Unlike many other activities, such as eating and
sleeping, music does not at first appear essential to human life. However,
it is impossible to escape the basic elements that make up music: pitch,
dynamics, timbre, and rhythm. We experience all these in the sounds of
everyday life.
