 Guitars

The term 'retro design' might be seen as a disparaging one, but it's one that's made its way into the mass market, with the appearance of 'modern' versions of vintage automobiles such as the Mini, the VW Beetle and Nissan's cutesie-pie Figaro. Danelectro, a 1947 company resurrected for the 1990s, followed a similar path with this updated rendition of a legendary American budget guitar, resurrected in Korean-made version. Uniquely, however, the DC3 retains everything that made the original Danelectros inefficient, unique, delectable-and the epitome of cheap'n'cheerful.

The first Danelectros were designed as bargain-basement mail order instruments for the Sears, Roebuck company. They had two main quirks: the guitars were made of 'Masonite'- a forerunner of what we'd today call hardboard - and the unique 'lipstick pickup' were as the name suggested, cased in surplus chromed tubes from a lipstick manufacturer. Those quirks ensured that Danelectro guitars looked and sounded like nothing else on the market. Nearly 50 years on, that's still the case.
