C. F. Martin was not the first guitar maker in America. Colonial Williamsburg had one, an six others have been documented earlier than Martin. However, none of was as influential. In fact no other nineteenth-century American guitar maker was influential but C. F. Martin. ( Orville Gibson's work in the 1890s would qualify him as a nineteenth-century maker, but his influence would not be fully realized until the twentieth century.) The numerous Martin guitars from the 1800s that survive today in good playing condition testify to the quality of Martin's craftsmanship and design. Although the Lyon and Healy company sold many more guitars than Martin in the 1800s, there are probably more Martins still around today than Washburns (Lyon and Healy's brand) and all other nineteenth-century brands combined.

Martin D-28 Marquis Acoustic Guitar Natural

Martin D-28 Marquis Acoustic Guitar Natural

Crafted to evoke the same powerful tone and sonorous projection as a pre-WWII D-28, the Martin D-28 Marquis Acoustic Guitar differs only by using the much less scarce, and therefore more affordable, Indian rosewood instead of Brazilian rosewood. Using only premium-grade solid Indian rosewood for the back and sides and a solid Adirondack spruce top, the Marquis Guitar delivers powerful sounds with scalloped Adirondack spruce braces and forward-shifted X-bracing. A special aging toner gives the wood a vintage countenance.

The list of historically accurate details, nearly overwhelming and totally exhaustive, captures the authentic spirit of the Martin D-28: mahogany blocks/dovetail neck joint construction, slot-through saddle, herringbone binding, neck dart, zipper back marquetry, ivoroid binding, herringbone top trim, Waverly butterbean tuners, and old-style wood fiber rosette.

The Martin D-28 Marquis also has a beveled and polished tortoise pickguard; ebony bridge with long saddle; modified V-shaped neck; ebony fretboard (1-3/4" nut, 25-2/5" scale) with diamond and square inlays; and fossil ivory nut, saddle, and bridgepins (with black dots).

Special Edition Series notables include the Golden Era decal on the peghead and a special inside label signed by C.F. Martin IV.

The Martin D-28 Marquis Acoustic Guitar is a lovingly crafted Indian rosewood version of the discontinued D-28GE.

Martin HD-28VE Acoustic-Electric Guitar

Martin HD-28VE Acoustic-Electric Guitar

The HD-28VE Acoustic-Electric Guitar is an update of one of the sweetest-sounding guitars in the Martin stable. It has all the same features as the original with the Fishman Ellipse Blend amplification system ingeniously mounted inside the soundhole to maintain the classic HD-28 lines while delivering electric amplification functions. The flexible soundhole-mount condenser mini-microphone has volume, blend, and phase controls for maximum tone-shaping flexibility.

The solid Sitka spruce top, solid Indian rosewood body, modified V-shape mahogany neck, herringbone trim, and prewar forward-shifted bracing produce the treasured tone and playability that made the original a classic. Part of Martin's Vintage Series, the HD-28VE Acoustic-Electric features ivoroid binding, HD zigzag purfling, ebony fretboard, vintage-style open tuners, and ebony bridge with long saddle.

Martin 000-28VS Acoustic Guitar

Vintage appointments include a slotted headstock which gives the guitar more snap, and such details as the old-style small logo, zigzag purfling on the back, butterbean tuner keys, herringbone top inlay, and diamond and squares fingerboard markers. Impeccably crafted in every detail, its tone is rich and balanced through all registers. Includes Martin hardshell case.

Martin M-38 Acoustic Guitar Vintage

Martin M-38 Acoustic Guitar Vintage

Martin is proud to restore the M-38 acoustic guitar back into the stock lineup. Long prized in performing and recording circles, the larger 0000 or Grand Auditorium shape is combined with the thinner 000 body depth to yield notes that resound and decay quickly allowing for new notes resulting in a tonal balance and power that is less prone to stage feedback and thus highly useful in the studio. Style 38 appointments are ornate but tasteful.

CF Martin & Co., Inc. is an instrument builder in the United States. It stands next to their products by their corporate history, which remains unbroken to the beginning of the 19th Century and  the story of a successful European immigrant and industrial history of the United States of America. CF Martin is still run as a family business and is currently led by the great-great-great-great-grandson of the founder.
The founder, Christian Friedrich Martin senior, was born on  January 31 1796 in Mark Neukirchen . After training with his father, he continued by Johann Georg Stauffer in Vienna, the guitar-training, and showed great talent , so that he quickly appointed to the foreman.

14 years later, after the apprenticeship in Vienna
, and his marriage in April 25 1825 with Ottilie Lucia Kühle, he returned to his hometown and opened his own business.

Christian Friedrich immigrated in September 1833 to New York.

In New York Christian Friedrich Martin opened his guitar shop the same year he came. In the beginning he kept an ordinary, even after today's performances thoroughly music shop where you find guitars  and other string instruments, he also sold strings, sheet music and accessories. Guitars were just made on order. In their distribution, but also in the production of the guitars himself, he worked with a number of music teachers, wholesalers and other partners. Therefore, many models are known from this period with "Martin & Schatz," or "Martin & Coupa. Martin guitars have enjoyed an excellent reputation at least during the time he spent in New York.

1838 Martin sold his business in New York and moved the factory to Nazareth (Pennsylvania). His focus now moved permanently to the production of high quality guitars.

After this move, the business transformed into a company with about 20 employees and expanded continuously, he opened his first factory in 1859. C.F. Martin died on  February 16 1873 and left behind a successful guitar company.

Martin has launched a series of signature models, including Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Richie Sambora, Paul Simon, Mark Knopfler, Tom Petty, Eric Johnson and Sting.  In addition, there are different sets of Martin Eric Clapton guitar strings (Clapton's Choice) for acoustic guitars.

Many famous guitarists use or used for years Martin guitars, including Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Joan Baez, Paul Simon, John Frusciante, Dick Gaughan, Neil Young, who plays a D-28 from the 40's, previously belonged
to Hank Williams .  Elvis Presley,  recorded the famous Sun sessions exclusively with his Martin.
